I love this next General Conference talk, from April 2010
Mothers Teaching Children in the Home by Elder L. Tom Perry
I can't even begin to explain the amazement I feel when the General Authorities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints speak. They are so good at gently telling us what we need to better, but at the same time giving us the motivation and confidence to actually get up and do it!
These are some of the quotes I find so encouraging.
"Parents must resolve that teaching in the home is a most sacred and important responsibility."
"According to the great plan of happiness, it is parents who are entrusted with the care and development of our Heavenly Father's children."
"It is parents who have been commanded by the Lord to bring up their children in light and truth."
"We [the leaders of the Church] believe in the immense power of teaching to increase faith of individuals and strengthen families."
"It is by divine design that the role of motherhood emphasizes the nurturing and teaching of the next generation."
"Elder Joseph Fielding Smith taught: 'It is the duty of parents to teach their children these saving principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ, so that they will know why they are to be baptized and that they may be impressed in their hearts with a desire to continue to keep the commandments of God after they are baptized, that they may come back into his presence. Do you, my good brethren and sisters, want your families, your children; do you want to be sealed to year fathers and your bothers before you ... ? If so, then you must begin by teaching at the cradle-side. You are to teach by example as well as precept."
This wonderful talk gives me light and truth as to what I need to do, to be better at nurturing and teaching my children. As I said earlier, it gives me the confidence that I can do those things to be a better mom, as well as being more loving and nurturing.
Everybody knows that a good mother gives her children a feeling of trust and stability. She is their earth. She is the one they can count on for the things that matter most of all. She is their food and their bed and the extra blanket when it grows cold in the night; she is their warmth and their health and their shelter; she is the one they want to be near when they cry. She is the only person in the whole world in a whole lifetime who can be these things to her children.
There is no substitute for her.
